I have a table which has header columns with a background colour. But after rendering, in the word document, the colours are not seen when opened
in MS office > 2000. In 2000 and 98 it shows the colours correctly. In the PDF the colours are fine too. I tried saving the template from Openoffice as well,
still no luck. Could it be the openoffice converter is unable to convert the table colours when converting to word?

OpenOffice limitations
Can you say what version of OpenOffice you are using? This sounds very much like a bug noted for OpenOffice3.1 (see the Known Issues page). At this time, OpenOffice 3.0.0 is the recommended version to use. Look to the Download page for the currently recommended version.

Openoffice 3.0.0

Yes, it was a bug in 3.1.0, thanks to the excellent docmosis support team. The problem with Openoffice is that, to find a previous version, one has to
do a lot of research. Finally I found where to get it and once I moved to 3.0.0 the colours started showing up correctly.
